Learning History by Experiencing Potomac

Welcoming Bay Area School Children Since 1995

Since 1995, the Potomac’s Education Programs have left an indelible mark on the lives of more than 55,000 school children. Every school term, Potomac is a dynamic learning platform as fifth graders and above have an enriching educational experience aboard the ship that goes beyond the limitations of a traditional classroom.

The Potomac: A Unique Learning Environment

The experiential learning opportunity offered on board the Potomac is unparalleled. Unlike conventional education settings, the program offers a tangible connection to the subjects they study. Potomac’s educational programs are not only informative but also engaging and memorable.

A Historical Marvel

History comes alive aboard the Potomac. The ship itself is a historical artifact, having served as Franklin D. Roosevelt’s Presidential Yacht. This rich heritage provides an authentic backdrop for teaching American history. Students learn about the life and times of an American president who used the vessel during some of the most consequential times in our nation’s history.  By connecting the past with the present, the Potomac’s programs inspire a deeper understanding and appreciation of the historical times in which President Roosevelt lived and worked.

Supported through Donations

Our schools program is made possible by contributions from the community, and by the commitment and dedication of the Potomac’s team to providing high-quality educational experiences. The potential for growth and expansion of these Potomac opportunities is substantial, and securing new sources of support is vital to this effort.

Future Prospects

With additional funding, the Potomac’s Educational Programs could significantly expand their reach. More schools from Oakland and the greater Bay Area could partake in these unique learning opportunities. Expanded programming could include diverse modules encompassing various aspects of ecology, economy, and history, tailored to different age groups and educational needs and fostering a generation of environmentally conscious and historically informed citizens.

Experiencing the Potomac has captivated the imaginations of thousands of Bay Area school children over the years. With the right resources and community engagement, the Potomac can continue to inspire and educate future generations and that this unique American historical treasure is appreciated and preserved for years to come.

If you are a teacher of fifth graders and above, please give us a call to learn more and to schedule a dockside tour or short cruise for your students or email contact@usspotomac.org.
