This story follows Bill Stewart’s extraordinary journey to salvage FDR’s presidential yacht, the Potomac, which had been deliberately sunk by unpaid crew in a Barbados harbor. After extensive repairs in a Barbadian shipyard—facing engine problems, valve grinding mishaps, and incompetent contractors—Stewart successfully restored the yacht despite crew sabotage and multiple setbacks. The perilous voyage to America was completed with only one working engine, making stops in Aruba and Panama while battling fuel shortages and financial constraints. The journey culminated in a triumphant arrival in San Diego amid media attention, and the yacht was eventually sold at auction to Elvis Presley, who planned to donate it to St. Jude’s Hospital, though it was ultimately sold for profit by Danny Thomas.
